At the end of June 2022, I travelled to Luing – one of the most beautiful islands on the west coast. For me, it was so much more than just a painting trip. With my anxiety of driving on unfamiliar fast roads, it was a huge achievement to go to a place only I wanted to go. By myself.

Within easy reach of Oban, Luing is one of the smaller islands on Scotland’s west coast. The larger population is at Cullipool in the north west of the island. The village with its white cottages is set strongly against the slate that makes up the island’s beaches.

For me it’s about the people I meet, the conversations we share. Drinking my latte and enjoying Ferrero Rocher whilst watching the sun go down, painting the last light. Going with the flow, like the waves in the sea. Listening to people sing and poems being performed, people being themselves, giving themselves the space and time to be just who and how they are.
